My Pre-Trip Checklist: 10 Things to Do Before You Leave for Vacation

I consider myself an obsessively organized person, especially when it comes to traveling. Even though I can get overwhelmed when it comes to deciding WHERE to go (there’s just too many great places to see – how are you supposed to pick one??), I dive headlong into research and planning as soon as I know our destination. But even I am capable of forgetting things, and the best thing that helps me is making a million lists. In the next few posts, I’ll share the lists I’ve created over the last few years to help me get ready to go on vacation. First up is my pre-vacation checklist! Here’s what I’ve done before almost every trip Daniel and I have taken together.

1.  Print copies of all travel documents.

Plane tickets, hotel reservations, vacation package confirmation, maps of travel routes or places to visit – EVERYTHING. The last thing you want to do is get lost somewhere with no internet and no map, or stuck without proof that you’re supposed to be wherever you are.

2.  Update your work calendar.

Before you leave your workplace, set “away” messages for your email and phone, and make sure your trip shows up on any shared calendars. Try to finish up any projects you are working on and leave any relevant information for your coworkers, if they need it.

3.  Leave your house in good hands.

Ask a neighbor, friend, or family member to keep an eye on your place while you’re gone. Have them feed your pets, water your plants, and bring any mail or packages inside.

4.  Check the weather one last time and finalize your packing list.

And do the rest of your laundry a few days before, just to ensure that your favorite pieces are clean! Once you’re ready to start packing, lay everything out on your bed or the floor. Yes, everything. That way, you can see exactly how much you’re taking and narrow your choices down a little to save space in your suitcase.

5.  Make room for vacation pictures.

If you’re going somewhere pretty, you’re going to want that extra data space on your phone or memory on your camera. Don’t wait until you’re already on your trip to start frantically deleting things after getting the dreaded “Storage Full” message as the pod of dolphins swims right by you and out of your life forever.

6.  Let your bank and/or credit card company know that you’ll be traveling.

This is really important if you’re traveling internationally. If you don’t let them know ahead of time, there’s a chance that your cards could get shut down for “suspicious activity” in another country.

7.  Schedule your preparatory appointments.

Get a haircut, pedicure, spray tan – whatever you need to do to make yourself look acceptably attractive to people who will never see you again.

8.  Download stuff on Netflix.

Did you know that you can download TV shows and movies on Netflix to watch later without using the internet?? Best. news. ever. Long plane rides just got a little less boring.

9.  Clean your house.

You don’t have to deep-clean everything, but I usually wipe down the bathrooms and the kitchen, and I vacuum as many rooms as I can. It’s also good to get rid of perishable food in the fridge, run the dishwasher, take out all the trash, and put new clean sheets on your bed.

10.  Save some money.

Right before you leave the house, turn the thermostat up or down, depending on the season. Unplug appliances to conserve energy. Make a Walmart run and buy some snacks to keep yourself from spending $25 on soft pretzels at the airport (which I always end up doing anyway, because AUNTIE ANNE’S).

Any suggestions or tips that help you get organized before you travel? Share them in the comments!

Vacation Reveal #2: Simma Family Edition

If you missed my first vacation reveal, here’s a quick recap: Daniel and I are cruising to Alaska this year, and I’m freaking out about it a little SO MUCH. But we’re also visiting another new place with my family! Daniel and I haven’t taken a trip with my family since we met almost 8 years ago, and I’m over the moon about the chance to bring together two of my favorite things – traveling with my family and traveling with Daniel. When my siblings and I were kids, we used to go to Mississippi to see our grandparents twice a year, every year: once in the summer and once for Christmas. It became a much-loved tradition, and I have many fond memories of listening to Adventures in Odyssey, stopping at the same travel plazas to get snacks, reading an entire book series during the 12-hour drive, holding our breath over the Mississippi bridge, and (when we got older) watching movies on the laptop. My family hasn’t really traveled long-distance since my grandparents moved to Oklahoma, so a trip together has been long overdue!

I’m dying with happiness over the fact that we’re going to….

colorado

COLORADO.

(Just typing it makes me shiver with excitement.)

My parents have been several times, including for their honeymoon, but none of us kids have been before. I’ve been dreaming about seeing genuine, huge mountains for my whole life, and if just looking at pictures of them can make me feel things, I can’t even imagine what it will be like to actually stand in front of one. I’m preparing for my breath to be stolen again and again!

We’re going to spend almost a week in a timeshare cabin outside of Pagosa Springs. While we’re there, we’ll take a ride on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad train, go whitewater rafting, and possibly even visit Mesa Verde National Park. And our home for the week looks awesome!

I’M. SO. READY.

I’ve never been to Colorado before, and I’m not sure what to pack! We’ll be there during the summer. Any suggestions?

My New Obsession: Pack Up + Go

travel

Y’ALL. Shortest blog post ever, but I had to share this with you!

Did you know that there’s a new business startup that will plan your vacation for you, but won’t reveal your destination until you’re physically leaving for your trip?? *channel your inner Monica from Friends*………..I KNOW!! This actually exists!! It’s called Pack Up + Go, and I’m kicking myself for not thinking of it first. (By the way – this is not a sponsored post; I’m just that excited about it.)

I discovered Pack Up + Go a couple weeks ago via this Business Insider article while I was researching something for our Alaska trip, and I was hooked from the title alone. From what I can tell, the company can’t be more than a few years old, but their premise is simple:

“Want to get away for a weekend but have no time to plan? What if you don’t know where you want to go? What if you want to be surprised? Pack Up + Go plans 3-day weekend trips around the United States. All you have to do is tell us your budget and fill out a quick survey.  We’ll take care of your travel + accommodation arrangements – all while keeping your destination a surprise” (via Pack Up + Go website).

COOLEST. IDEA. EVER. I love to travel, but I love surprises even more, and this idea sounds like my kind of paradise. As soon as I was finished reading up on the company, I sent Daniel a one-sentence email that said “OMG WE ARE DOING THIS.” I hope we can someday!

What do you think – would you take one of these “surprise destination” trips?

Vacation Reveal: We’re Traveling To…!!

Image result for princess alaska cruise

…..ALASKA!!

WE’RE CRUISING TO ALASKA!! I can barely breathe every time I think about it! Both of us have wanted to do this for years, and it still hasn’t sunk in yet that we’re actually going. We’ll be cruising with Princess, a first for us – our only other cruise was with Royal Caribbean, and we visited Honduras, Belize, and Cozumel. For this cruise, we have four ports of call in Alaska and British Columbia, and we’ll be doing some scenic cruising through Glacier Bay. We even get to explore Seattle for a day or two to bookend the trip!

We’ll be stopping in:

I’ve been doing so much Googling and Pinteresting and TripAdvisor-ing, and my WORD, the photos!! My heart has skipped so many beats it’s unhealthy. My dream location is almost always a big body of water next to awe-inspiring mountains, so this is basically heaven. And being the organizer that I am, I’ve already been planning everything down to the tiniest detail – even mapping out the route from our cabin to different locations on the ship, making lists of “must-see’s” and good eats at each port, and figuring out how much time we’ll need to walk everywhere. There’s only one thing that I’m unsure of, and that’s what to do with our bags on the last day of the trip.

Here’s our problem: We arrive back in Seattle on a Saturday around 7:00 am. Our flight isn’t until around 5:00 pm that night. We’ll need a few hours to depart the ship, pick up our bags, and go through customs, but we have a big chunk of time to kill, and I’m not sure what we should do in the meantime. I figured it would be nice to try another local restaurant, but do we just drag our bags around with us? I’m stumped. Any ideas?

alaska

As far as general Alaskan cruise advice goes, here’s what others have told us so far:

  • Bring your own binoculars for wildlife sightings on the cruise because the ship will charge you an arm and a leg for a pair
  • Pack clothing pieces that you can easily layer for more warmth or remove to cool off, depending on what the weather does
  • Explore the ship fully as soon as possible so you can find your favorite place to enjoy the view for the rest of the trip
  • Visit the Mendenhall Glacier ice caves in Juneau
  • Don’t spend the extra money on a room with a balcony – there are lots of places to take in the scenery on the ship, and you’ll hardly spend any time in your room anyway
  • Remember to pack a few things you don’t normally need for a Caribbean cruise (rain gear, warmer jackets, gloves, hats)

As the trip gets closer, I’ll share my packing list, travel checklist, and maybe even a peek in my suitcase…!

Oh, who am I kidding; you’ll definitely see the inside of my suitcase.

Have you been on an Alaskan cruise before? I welcome any advice or suggestions!

Christmas in Chicago

If you had told me at the beginning of December that I’d be spending part of my Christmas ice skating and being introduced to Downton Abbey in Chicago, I would have thought you were nuts. But that’s exactly what happened, and the three days I got to spend with my sister and grandparents were such a blast!

The week before Christmas, Robyn and I spontaneously decided to book plane tickets for the following Monday. Meaning, we booked a flight that was less than a week away, and the day after Christmas, no less. Meaning, I had three days to do about ten loads of laundry in order to pack for three separate Christmases (Daniel’s parents, my parents, and one set of grandparents) AND pack a suitcase for plane travel. Oh and I was also still doped up on pain meds from getting my wisdom teeth out. Lol. First time for everything!

We flew out of OKC to Dallas, then from Dallas to Chicago. And let me tell you something – when we got on the plane in Dallas, it was THE NICEST plane I have ever been on!! I’m not exaggerating, this thing was superb. The aisles were wider, it had three sections of seats instead of two, the snacks were better, the seats were more comfortable, AND – best part – every seat had its own power outlet and TV screen in front of it with hundreds of TV shows and movies to choose from. I was thoroughly impressed.

The first day and half was spent relaxing, eating, hanging out with our grandparents (who I somehow never took a picture with, *thumbs down*), and trying to get Grandma’s cat Bethany to like us.

Robyn finally convinced her! She’s the cutest.

Wednesday, we conquered Chicago on our own! We took the train into the city, then a taxi to the Field Museum of Natural History. I had been before in 2006, but I enjoyed going back! One of the larger special exhibits, “China’s First Emperor and His Terracotta Warriors,” included real terracotta pieces brought over from China, some of which dated back as far as 221 BC.

Looking at clay statues that were carved by hand 200 years before Jesus was even born…it stole my breath.

We didn’t have an endless amount of time in the museum, but we sure had fun wandering around while we were there!

Arguably the happiest picture from the trip. :)

Since we were only a few city blocks from Millennium Park (our next destination), we just walked! The weather was gorgeous, and we got to enjoy the view more than we would from the back of a cab.

img_2171img_2177img_2175

The highlight of our adventure was ice skating in Millennium Park! Although “ice skating” barely describes what we were actually doing. We both put one foot on the ice and realized we had made a huge mistake, but we managed to make it around the rink three times. It took us seventeen hours, but still. Three times!

We were better at people watching and throwing shade.

Nobody but Robyn will really ever understand why the photo on the left is so funny. Let’s just chalk it up to my terrible photography skills and leave it at that. :) The important part is that she is a great travel buddy, this trip was good for my soul, and now we can smugly tell people that we ice skated in Millennium Park at Christmastime (and conveniently leave out the part about the adorably tiny 3-year-old girl who literally skated circles around us while we clung to the railing).

Enjoy my travel posts? Buckle up, because I’ve got not one, but TWO 2017 vacation reveals coming soon!! Stay tuned :)

30 By 30 Update

Hey y’all! I thought you guys might like a mini update on my 30 By 30 project. In case you missed my original post, let me catch up you up! First of all, I’m always more likely to do something if it’s attached to a list because I love crossing stuff off. Second, when it occurred to me that turning 26 meant I was steadily hurtling toward being 30, I freaked out a little bit and then cheered myself up by creating a list of fun things to do or work on during the next few years. Here’s what I’ve crossed off so far!

#6 – Read 10 new books. I’ve started several, but so far I’ve only finished Bossypants by Tina Fey. (And it was just as funny as I hoped it would be – like, laugh out loud funny!) Currently on my nightstand to finish?

  • Adulting: How to Become a Grown-up in 468 Easy(ish) Steps, by Kelly Williams Brown
  • Unlearned: Reclaiming the Daring Truth of Biblical Femininity, by Chelsea Mead
  • The Defining Decade: Why Your Twenties Matter–And How to Make the Most of Them Now, by Meg Jay
  • Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns), by Mindy Kaling
  • The Best Yes: Making Wise Decisions in the Midst of Endless Demands, by Lysa TerKeurst

#7 – Learn how to curl my hair. My cousin/soulmate Jennifer gave me curling wand for Christmas last year, and I’ve been learning! I’m no master, but I can f i n a l l y do more to my hair besides straighten it, scrunch it, and wrangle it into a ponytail, YAY. I need someone to give me girl lessons and teach me how to fix my hair for real.

#20 – Update my home decor. I was so happy to finally put something above our couch in the living room! I hated staring at a huge blank wall. And even though I still have more that I’d like to do, like buying some new rugs and tying my living room together with more of a theme, I’m perfectly happy crossing it off after finishing that first project.

#23 – Take a group vacation. We had a blast traveling to Jamaica with Daniel’s family last May, and we already have another trip with my side of the family on the calendar for next summer! We’ve also wanted to go on a cruise or something with a group of couples for a few years, and I really hope we’re able to make that happen.

As for my plans for the rest of the list:

#2 – Take an Alaskan cruise. This is on both of our bucket lists, and since Daniel passed the CPA (*angelic chorus*) and our 5-year anniversary is next year (uhhh…??), we’re talking seriously about going on one to celebrate both! All fingers and toes are crossed.

#8 – Make a complicated recipe. I can’t pick between these three – homemade croissants, Triple-Chocolate Mousse Cakes, or Potato Rings with Buttermilk Ranch. Which one should I make?? Maybe I’m silly for thinking these recipes are complicated, but I’ve had two of them pinned for almost five years, so…

#28 – Really establish a cooking/cleaning routine. I’m convinced that I am the worst housewife in existence. I like having a clean house, but I suck when it comes to cleaning. And I like to cook sometimes, but most of the time I get caught up in thinking about how long it takes and how I’ll have to clean up afterward and I lose my momentum. I’ve tried multiple methods to stay on top of things and nothing has really stuck so far, but I’m open to suggestions!

*Bonus: Visit a new place every year. I saw a pin on Pinterest once that said this, and I LOVE it. I don’t think we’ve gone anywhere new yet this year, but we’ve still got a few months.

Happy Friday! :)

Quartz Mountain

image

What up, friends?? Sorry for my sporadic posting. I’ve been lazy in a lot of ways this summer – meal planning, house cleaning, friendship maintaining, small business-ing – and unfortunately, blogging was one of the things I could put on the back burner without consequences. But I’ve been convicted about my lack of discipline (much like a year ago with my first DietBet!), and I’m going to be much more consistent with this. You can count on it!

In mid-July, I got to travel for work for the first time in months, and it was GLORIOUS. Every year, the Oklahoma Regents host a week-long counselor’s conference at Quartz Mountain Resort in Lone Wolf, Oklahoma, and I was invited to sit on a panel of college representatives for a session on the last day of the conference. Because the resort is 4 hours from Durant, I had originally planned to stay at a hotel in Altus. But through a straight-up blessing from the Lord, I was gifted a one-night stay at the lodge…for free.

I have one thing to say: being a college recruiter has its perks at times!

imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

The resort was more rustic than luxury, but it was such a relaxing place! I drove in past lots of cabins and campsites, and when I took a walk around the resort and found people pushing off into the lake in kayaks, I wanted SO MUCH to jump in after them. I loved the combination of lake + mountains – very calming. I wish Daniel could have come with me!

I’m so ready for recruitment season to start – only a few more weeks and I’ll be on the road again!

image

P.S. Are these not the cutest bath samples you’ve ever seen?? Those shampoo bottles blew me away! If I wasn’t head over heels for MONAT, I would have taken them with me and put them in my guest bathroom. ;)

Hope you guys are having a good week!

Jamaican Vacay

I hope I never reach a point in my life when plane travel isn’t this much fun! I love traveling with Daniel, of course, but I love traveling with our families too – there’s something comforting about being surrounded by Hendricksons on a plane. :)

We spent Friday night before our flight in Thackerville so that (1) we would have a shorter drive to the airport and (2) we could leave our German shepherd named Fitz at the house so he could play with the other dogs while we were gone. (Also, he turned a YEAR OLD while we were gone! I never thought I would be sad about missing a dog’s birthday…I was wrong.) The next morning, we headed to Dallas to meet more of the siblings at the airport. And of course we got Auntie Anne’s, but if I didn’t document it, did it really happen…?

My biggest mistake was wearing jeans. I usually wear jeans even when we are headed to the beach because I freeze on the plane, but then I just change as soon as we get to the resort. Little did I know how much standing around/waiting/walking what felt like 4 miles to our room we would do. Needless to say, jeans were a bad decision and literally the first thing I did once we got to our room was peel them off and put on shorts.

To be honest, I really didn’t take very many pictures, and I don’t feel bad about it AT ALL. Like I mentioned in my vacation preview post, we came into this vacation with basically no agenda, and it was AWESOME. We spent most of our time eating, laying on the beach, snorkeling, and avoiding the random rainstorms by watching movies in our room, and aside from getting a little sick, I wouldn’t have had it any other way!

Highlights from the trip include:
– the water (the color blows me away every time!)
– cliff diving and snorkeling in caves
– eating lobster on the island
– my 90-minute massage…heaven!!
– the gorgeous sunsets
– hanging out with almost all the Hendrickson siblings

Hands down, the best part was no obligations. Setting an alarm, eating healthy, keeping track of what time it was, putting on makeup – I didn’t worry about any of it. AND, I didn’t have to cook or clean anything for an entire week!!
imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

Final thoughts for future beach vacations:

(1) Maybe reconsider jeans for the plane,

(2) Take more swimsuits,

(3) Never stop using MONAT because it kept my hair from drying out,

and (4) Never take a hair straightener to the Caribbean again. Pointless.

Needless to say, I’m already looking forward to the next trip on our calendar: we have another family trip planned for next summer with the Simma side!! Where are we going, you ask? That’s a secret…for now! ;)

Jamaica Vacation Preview

Back in May, we spent a super relaxing week on the beach in Jamaica with Daniel’s family, and it was WONDERFUL. It was one of the only vacations we’ve been on that didn’t include much of an agenda, which, to be honest, was exactly what all of us needed. This vacation was such a breath of fresh air, in more ways than one! (Minus the day that a few of us probably got food poisoning…but let’s not talk about that.)

Lots more photos to come! Hope you’re having a happy week!

Packed: Jamaica Picks

image

I feel like the first part of this post could be an exact “copy & paste” from my Packed: Chicago Picks post last July. How do vacations always manage to sneak up on me?? I’m mentally packed for months, but then the week of the trip, I panic because I’m running out of time and pack wayyyyy too much stuff. At least I’m somewhat organized! I saved my packing list and vacation check list from our cruise last year on the computer, and that decision has been a total lifesaver. Is anybody else as obsessed with lists as I am? Let me know in the comments if you want to see my check list and packing list – I’ll share them in my next post!

I’m apparently predictable when it comes to packing, because I’m still including a mix of basic pieces in my bag, with a few beach necessities:

•  an oversized tee
•  printed shorts
•  Chacos (so hipster of me)
•  a maxi dress
•  a wide-brimmed fedora

I’m not usually into BLINDINGLY BRIGHT colors, but I weirdly found myself wanting something yellow for this trip. I have this pair of printed shorts from Old Navy that I fell in love with instantly, but then brought them home and realized that I don’t really know what shirt to wear them with. When I imagined what color would look good with them, the color yellow popped into my head. I don’t even like yellow! This vacation is doing weird things to me.

We’ll be at the resort for a week and I’m still not entirely sure what we’re doing each day, so I haven’t planned every single outfit. But here’s a taste!

#1: Floral scarf. Hands down, one of my best purchases ever. The craziest thing is, I can’t even remember where it’s from! Pretty sure it’s from a boutique online.
#2: “Locals Only” tank. I just got this a couple days ago from Bliss Boutique! It just screamed ‘beach vacation,’ not to mention the fact that it’s by Comfort Colors, which makes it an automatic winner.
#3:  New sunnies. I. LOVE. THESE. I found them at TJ Maxx for like $12, and the subtle cat-eye slays me!
#4: Grey printed tee. Old Navy will always be my go-to for basic wardrobe pieces. This top is super soft and the perfect kind of oversized.
#5: Hawaiian print “Keds.” (They’re not real Keds, they’re from Target.) How great is that print?? I should have gotten two pairs, because I’m going to wear these until they fall apart.
#6: Printed shorts. Old Navy strikes again! The only printed pair of shorts I owned before these had stripes, but I looked at these and was instantly transported to Jamaica.
#7: J. Crew denim shorts. Literally the perfect denim shorts. They fit like a dream. I shouldn’t have spent so many years wasting money on cheap, flimsy denim!

Other essentials for this trip include:

— waterproof beach bag
— Chacos
— sunscreen
— Downy wrinkle release spray
— cute swimsuit cover-up
— 1 pair of heels + cute clutch + statement necklaces, in case we decide to be fancy

Packing Tips

1. Make a list and stick to it.
Realistically decide how many outfits you need, based on where you’re traveling and your length of stay. Don’t play the “Oh, but I neeeeeed six cardigans because I want options” game. Or the “What if we get stranded and end up hiking across the island?? I have to make sure we have a first aid kid, bottled water, a flare, and an emergency snowsuit” game. You don’t need it all, I promise you don’t. If you’re an overpacker, gather up everything you want to take and reduce it by at least 1/3.

image

2. Lay out your clothes by outfit.
This helps in several ways. First, it keeps you from overpacking because you see exactly how many outfits you’re taking. Second, it makes things easy once you’re actually on vacation because you don’t have to root through multiple stacks of clothes to put an outfit together. Less time in front of your suitcase = more time in front of the ocean.

image

3. Before you put anything in your suitcase, group similar things together.
This might sound repetitive, but just go with me here. You’ve already stacked your outfits together, tees/tanks on top of shorts/jeans. Gather everything else up (accessories, toiletries, extras) and keep similar items with each other. This will allow for a second round of purging, if you need it, because you have eyes on EVERYTHING you’re packing at once and can see if you have more stuff than you really need. If you pack things in groups, it also makes things easier to find in your suitcase whenever you get to the hotel.

image

4. Fill your bag with smaller bags.
When you have lots of little things that you don’t want to lose in a mountain of clothes, put them in smaller zippered bags. It’s way easier to find your favorite pair of earrings by grabbing the bag you packed them in, rather than rifling through a pile of swimsuits.

I’m sooooo ready to lay on that beach! Jamaica, here we come!

What tricks do you use for packing smart? I’d love to know!
