I seriously can’t stand still because our trip is SO SOON!! I’ve been mentally packing my bags since January, but now it’s actually time and I’m freaking out a little because of how much is left to do before we leave.

So far, our itinerary for the week looks like this:

Sunday: relax
Monday: relax
Tuesday: relax
Wednesday: relax
Thursday: relax
Friday: relax
Saturday: cry because we have to go home

I almost don’t believe that it’s finally time to get on a plane because we’ve known about the trip for so long. It’s been torturous I’m ready to have zero responsibilities other than soaking up the sun and stuffing my face for a week, and I know Daniel is too after months of studying for the CPA. (Speaking of – he takes his third test out of four tomorrow, so please say a prayer for him!)

I also never imagined I would hear myself pray, “God, I just really need longer leg hair.”  The last time I shaved, I used the cream shave that MONAT created for their new men’s system, and I SWEAR it stunted my leg hair growth. Which I guess is good? But not when you have an appointment scheduled to wax said leg hair off for your beach vacation. I’m definitely using the cream shave from now on if it keeps my hair from coming back, but for the next few days, you’ll probably be able to find me googling “how to make your leg hair grow faster”.

One of my favorite parts of traveling is the packing! I love picking outfits to wear and figuring out how to fit a lifetime of stuff into a too-small suitcase. I’m obsessed with this compilation by Jones Design Company and definitely using it as inspiration for our week. Although I could honestly pack a couple of swimsuits, snorkeling gear, and some sunscreen and be good to go. :)

Stay tuned for a post with my outfit picks and packing tips!

Vacation Plans

You’ll never in a million years guess where we’re going next month.

Remember back in January when I wrote a post asking for your advice about where we should vacation this year? We were pretty set on the Northwest – Seattle, specifically – when out of the blue, Daniel’s mom contacted us with a delicious idea for a family vacation. I wasn’t sure if Daniel would be game since he wanted to branch out from the Caribbean, but to my surprise, he talked details with his mom and jumped right on board!

We’re going (BACK) to……..

— JAMAICA, MON. —

*screaming*

I say “going back” because we’ve been there before! We went to Couples San Souci in Ocho Rios for our honeymoon and it was dreamy. The resort we’re visiting this time is Clubhotel Riu Negril. Daniel’s family has actually been to this resort before back a few years ago, and they make it sound like paradise!

When we were on our honeymoon, we ventured off of our resort a few times to visit Dunn’s River Falls and the Luminous Lagoon, but I’d love to find a new gem on this trip! We’ll be there for a week, and it might be fun to have an evening for just the two of us to go explore (aka eat lobster). Any suggestions from the audience?

Here’s to hoping the next month flies by!

Stay tuned for my packing list + traveling tips!

Uh…….. I’m turning 26 in two days.

Let it be known, first of all, that I LOVE my birthday. I’ve loved every single one of my birthdays. I love my birthday so much that I kind of maybe irrationally expect everyone else to know when it’s my birthday, and if someone who knows me doesn’t wish me happy birthday, I’m disappointed that they forgot about my birthday.

That said. Turning 26 is weird.

Turning 25 felt exciting, like I became a new kind of grown-up. I felt important in a more sophisticated way. “Oh, me? Yeah…I’m 25.” (Cue the smug smile.) Turning 26 feels a little like waking up the day after you run a marathon: you’re proud of what you’ve accomplished, but also a little bit ready to just die already.

To cheer myself up, I’m taking a leaf out of a fellow blogger’s book! My friend Caitlin Boswell from Absolutely Bositively created a list of 30 things to do before she turns 30, and I’ve decided to do the same! I’m obsessed with list-making, and I like having stuff to look forward to.

30 By 30

1. Have babies.
This one makes me go “…….whaaaaaaaaa!??!?!!?!” a little bit, but it belongs on the list. :)

2. Take an Alaskan cruise.
Daniel and I have had this on our list for awhile! We loved the Caribbean cruise we took last April, but the next one we go on will have to include mountains, snow, and whales.

3. Pay for someone’s dinner anonymously.
Someone did this for us once and it was so neat! I want to make someone else feel the way I did.

4. Go on a big adventure.
I’d love for it to be some crazy awesome vacation, but I left this one vague for a reason because with Daniel as my best friend, who the heck KNOWS what shenanigans we’ll get into in the next 4 years.

5. Throw someone a surprise party.
I. LOVE. SURPRISES. SO. MUCH. And I love throwing parties, so this is pretty much a necessity.

6. Read 10 new books.
First on my list is a gift from Daniel: Bossypants by Tina Fey!!

7. Learn how to curl my hair.
I know…I know. :( I’m stylistically challenged, but my bestie got me a curling wand for Christmas, so I have no more excuses.

8. Make a complicated recipe.
You know what I’m talking about – the one you’ve had pinned for four years but never attempted because you’re daunted by the ingredients list alone? I’m gonna do it.

9. Complete the 52-Week Money Challenge.
Seems easy enough! And it’s enticing to think about getting to the end of a year having saved that much so simply. The hard part will be not dipping into it for spontaneous unnecessary purchases, like a dog sweater that Fitz would destroy before wearing it but it would look so cute OH MY GOSH.

The Color Run - the happiest 5K ever. I will do this.:

10. Participate in a Color Run.
I hate running with my whole being, but this looks really fun.

11. Deliver meals to new parents.
Because allllllll my friends are having alllllllll the babies. And also because I love to give gifts that they’ll actually appreciate and use!

12. Turn MONAT into an actual job.
This is a biggie, and I kind of scared myself by putting it on here. But this is something I really want.

13. Host a backyard dinner party.
I’ve wanted to do this for years, and now we F I N A L L Y have an awesome backyard to do it in! Come on, summer!

14. Plan a “stay-cation.”
How delicious does it sound to take an entire day off from work, dress up your bedroom like it’s an upscale hotel room, and do nothing but watch movies and EAT? Ahhhhh.

15. Take Fitz on a trip.
I’m not 100% sure that including this one wasn’t a huge mistake, considering he never stops moving right now and is a hyper terror on walks…but after all, he is still a puppy. He’ll grow up eventually and I would love to travel somewhere fun with him as a sidekick!

16. Create a new annual family tradition.
Any suggestions?? What’s one of yours?

photos from each state they visited - glued onto a giant map and cut to fit the shape of the state.:

17. Make a map of places we’ve visited.
I really like this one, this one, and this one. Can’t wait to make one and put it on the wall!

18. Take anniversary pictures with Daniel.
I told myself “Oh yeah, we’ll take pictures every year after we get married!” and that definitely hasn’t happened. Time to be a woman of my word.

19. Spend a long weekend tucked away in a cabin.
Nothing is for sure yet, but we *might* be able to check this one off in a couple weeks! Eek!

20. Update my home decor.
Since we got married, my decorating style has been a weird combination of re-purposed wedding decor, homemade gifts we’ve been given, and odds and ends I’ve bought on clearance from random stores. I’m ready for everything to go together so I feel happy and comfortable when I walk in a room.

21. Make our backyard fun.
I am bursting with ideas, and first on my list is globe lights!

22. Grow the blog.
To be completely honest, I’m not really sure what I mean by “grow” yet. Maybe it’s monetizing, or extending my reach, or writing content that goes viral. Or maybe it’s none of those, and it’s simply learning to create without apologizing for it. We’ll see!

23. Take a group vacation.
When Daniel and I took our Caribbean cruise, we kept thinking the whole time how fun it would be to go back with some of our friends. Fingers crossed that this one happens soon!

24. Give away a few blessing bags.
I discovered these via Pinterest and they are SUCH a neat idea. I hate driving by homeless people with nothing to give them. My goal is to make a couple and always keep one or two in my car.

How To Host A Favorite Things Party! | Twin Cities Moms Blog

25. Have a “Favorite Things” party.
This sounds like so much fun! I think the most complicated part will be deciding what my “favorite things” are – I have wayyyy too many favorites.

26. Visit 5 new states.
It’s really sad how few I’ve visited. The west coast is completed untouched, so this one will be really easy. Especially if we make that Alaskan cruise happen!

27. Go on a fancy dress-up date.
There’s something about a dress that really fits, scarlet red lips, and a good pair of heels that makes a girl feel sassy. We went on one in Dallas about a year and a half ago as part of a marriage retreat weekend. We were the most dressed up we’ve ever been (besides wedding clothes, duh), and we STILL didn’t feel quite fancy enough to be there. We had a blast!

28. Really establish a cooking/cleaning routine.
I’m convinced I’m the worst wanna-be housewife in the entire world. I really really want to be good at things like cooking and cleaning and scheduling, and SOMEtimes…I am! I do like to cook, and I love organization. But somehow I just haven’t mastered the art of housewife-ing. And I want to. So bad. My poor husband.

29. Publish my book.
O     M     G.
Those three words together are terrifying. But it’s honestly long overdue. I need to quit kicking the idea around and actually do it.

30. Take a road trip.
I love the idea of having an ultimate destination in mind but just hopping in the car and driving without too much of a plan, stopping whenever we want, and finding funny little things to take pictures of along the way!

What do you think of my list?? Any suggestions?

Where Should We Vacation?

Adventure Is Out There!:

I’ve probably planned about 47 different vacations in my mind, and ultimately, I don’t care where we go as long as I have a great view, great food, and great company. To save a little money this time around, my plan is to stay in the United States for our next trip.

NORTHWEST IDEAS:
– Seattle
– Portland
– Yellowstone National Park

NORTHEAST IDEAS:
– New York City
– Boston
– Maine

I have too many gorgeous ideas swimming around in my mind – help me choose where we should go! We’re planning to travel sometime between April and July. Should we go northwest, or northeast?

My Norwegian Fall Break

Oh, Wisconsin. What a beautiful fall break we spent together! I fall more in love with you every time I’m there.

This trip was heritage-themed, organized by some of Daniel’s family members with the intention of exploring the Norwegian background of and stories surrounding his mom’s side of the family. We stayed in a charming B&B lodge on Lake Ripley, and I wish we had gotten more time to enjoy the view! Our days were full to the brim with dozens of activities, including:

  • the dairy farm on campus at the University of Wisconsin (including ice cream from their creamery!)
  • a fancy-pants evening at a dinner theatre with incredible food and West Side Story
  • Norskedalen, a Norwegian heritage center in the mountains
  • a traditional lutefisk dinner at Daniel’s great-grandma’s old church
  • a trip to Ridgehurst, the Ross family farm
  • tons of delicious meals involving more cheese and ice cream than any normal human should consume

P.S. Have you been waiting impatiently for more “new house” news?? Keep an eye out for a post about our future home (including pictures!) very, very soon!

Wisconsinspiration

Sorry for the silence, guys! It’s recruitment season, which means I have next to no computer time – but I haven’t forgotten about you all! I’m especially psyched for this week because it’s FALL BREAK. And I work for a school, meaning I actually get to celebrate it for the first time in years. WHAT. UP.

We’ll be spending part of this week in beautiful Wisconsin with some of Daniel’s family for a little family reunion of sorts. We got to visit last fall and guys….I am completely in love. It is one of the most beautiful states I’ve ever seen. All the farmland and rolling hills out in the country looked like a patchwork quilt. Everything was so well kept, there were flowers everywhere, the leaves were turning, and the weather was perfect! The travel bug has been biting since I got back from Chicago in July, so I’m very much looking forward to a mini-getaway.

I’ve been impatiently waiting for fall weather to get here, so I’m almost literally jumping for joy that we are going to 50 to 60-degree weather. I’m so ready to bust out my sweaters and coats!

AHHHH. So ready to pack my bags and get on that plane. Can’t wait to show you pictures of the gorgeous Wisconsin countryside! Happy Monday!

What’s inspiring you this fall?

We started our second day in Chicago bright and early and headed to Shedd Aquarium, the largest indoor aquarium in the entire world! My grandma had never been to one before, and she was awestruck by all of the different colors and weird types of things living under the water. I had originally wanted to go just to see the big stuff (beluga whales, sharks, etc.), but watching her discover a whole new world quickly became my favorite reason for going. (And yes…the song did just run through my head. Couldn’t help it. High five if it happened to you too.)

IMG_4163  IMG_4167  IMG_4166   IMG_4173
This not-so-little guy was talented! We didn’t go to the show, but in the Polar Play zone, you could watch it from underneath! We didn’t get to see any dolphins – *sadness* – but we got to watch lots of whales play and do tricks.

Our next stop was the Art Institute, where Robyn fangirled hardcore over art, and the rest of us were like, “Ooh…look at that old rock.” Haha, no but really, I enjoyed it too. I may have only truly freaked out about the touristy paintings, but still. I felt very adult and weird, like I wasn’t grown-up enough to be walking around looking at art – although the fact that I knew how to pronounce “Renoir” and “Degas” made me feel pretty classy.
IMG_4176 IMG_4177  IMG_4178 IMG_4179  IMG_4181 IMG_4183  IMG_4185 IMG_4188 IMG_4190 IMG_4194
Still can’t believe I actually saw these paintings in person.

For lunch, I had my first Shake Shack experience – and I. AM. A. FAN. Holy yum. After that, we walked across the street and explored Millennium Park. It was one of my favorite places when I visited before and I couldn’t wait for everyone else to see it!
IMG_4197  IMG_4201 IMG_4198
SO many people. All there to memorialize themselves in a giant mirrored coffee bean.

Later that day, we took a trolley to spend the evening out at Navy Pier!
IMG_4203  IMG_4205 IMG_4206  IMG_4207
That burger I had…good grief. Bacon/onion “relish,” Monterey Jack cheese, BBQ sauce, and crispy onion strings, all on a pretzel bun. *Arteries clogged for life…worth it*

By far, one of my favorite things we did on the whole trip was buy a 2-ride ticket for the Ferris wheel and the swings. The view from the top of the Ferris wheel was gorgeous, and the swings…well, let’s just say Jennifer had a marvelous time and leave it at that. Hahaha :) :)

I fell in love with the city all over again. :)

It sure was hard to leave the next day, but I think we were all ready to be home.
IMG_4234 IMG_4238Of course, this trip would not have been possible without two very special people. An enormous THANK YOU is due to my grandma and Dick for being so generous and bringing us to visit! It was a beautiful gift, and I had the best time! Love you guys so much! ♥

I usually want to visit new places instead of the same places over and over again, but something about Chicago is calling me back! Probably the food…

Yeah, definitely the food.

What about you – do you like to revisit your favorite places repeatedly, or go somewhere new each time you travel?

Chicago: Part II

After my crazy day of travel, I got a good night’s sleep – and good thing I did, because once we got started Friday morning, we didn’t stop until we left on Sunday!

  • Thursday: travel day
  • Friday:
      – Chicago Botanic Garden
      – Train ride into the city
      – Homewood Suites

  • Sunday: travel day

On Friday, we made plans to go to the Chicago Botanic Garden. It was SO PRETTY. Seriously, it was amazing. Everything was so green and lush!

Brb, I just found the next Thomas Kinkade puzzle. That is a literal field of flowers. *swoon*

After the botanic garden and a quick lunch, we took a train from Deerfield into the city to check into our hotel suite!

This pizza place was one of the first to serve deep dish pizza in Chicago – and it did not disappoint! SO. MUCH. CHEESE.

We parted ways from my grandparents after supper; they went back to the hotel for some much needed rest while Robyn and Jennifer and I took in the gorgeous views from the top of the John Hancock Observatory:IMG_4144 IMG_4145 IMG_4146 IMG_4148 IMG_4150 IMG_4151
It was the perfect time to go up – the sun was setting and it was later in the evening, so there wasn’t a huge amount of people crowding the windows.

After seeing how awesome the the beach looked from the observatory, we made a spontaneous decision to walk over and check it out!IMG_4156 IMG_4157 IMG_4158I could get used to a view like that! If I lived nearby, I think I would go every week.

Oh, and I almost forgot – the view from our hotel room was CHOICE.IMG_4134  IMG_4160

What a beautiful weekend it was!

Chicago was just as wonderful as I remembered: the lake, the city skyline, the food, even the people. I’ve been to New York City, Austin, Dallas, Washington D.C., and now Chicago twice – and I was so impressed by how clean the city was, and how friendly the people were! Definitely want to go back again and take Daniel with me next time.

This trip was a “just-for-fun” trip with some of my family, so our itinerary was basically whatever we wanted to do. That was the easy part.

But first I had to actually GET there.

Which, incredibly, was a lot harder than you would expect.

(SPOILER ALERT: I made it to Chicago, I just took the scenic route.)

First off: Wednesday night, I did that whole “go-to-bed-later-than-I-wanted-because-I-waited-too-long-to-start-actually-packing” thing. My flight left at 9:00 am, so I planned to leave the house just before 6:00, which would supposedly get me to the airport around 7:30.

I filled my car up with gas, turned up the radio, and had a grand old time on my way to Dallas. I watched the sun come up and thought how lucky I was that the roads were so clear. *eye roll* Wishful thinking. I got about 8 miles away from the airport and BAM – standstill traffic. My panic grew with each passing minute. I finally made it out of the gridlock just in time to make it to a nearly full airport parking lot and spent 10 more precious minutes driving around trying to find a parking space. I walked what felt like two miles to the shuttle station and managed to catch the shuttle right as it was about to leave.

When the bus dropped me off, I became one of those people I used to make fun of: the frantic, hair-flying-everywhere people who run through the airport. I literally ran through the airport.

I stood in the slowest moving line ever, then noticed that I had completely passed up the self-serve check-in kiosks. I scooted out of line, walked up to the nearest screen, and punched in my record locator.

“Unfortunately, the time allowance for checking baggage has expired for your flight.”

….what.

I pulled a uniformed guy over.

“Is this real? Is this a thing??” I instantly realized how stupid I looked for asking.

“Yeah, umm…you can stand in that line and see if maybe they can still check it.”

Oh okay, so the line I was just in that now has 12 other people in it? Cool.

Time check: it’s 8:18.

After standing in line for 20 MINUTES, I get up to the counter to find out that not only can’t I check my luggage, I can’t make the flight at all. I was put on standby and told that the next flight to Chicago left in two hours. It was all I could do not to burst into tears right there in front of this blue-blazer-wearing lady who didn’t even look the tiniest bit sorry.

So I did what any normal human would do and cheered myself up with Auntie Anne’s.

IMG_4083[1]

I waited for two hours next to my second gate, feeling guilty for hoping that somebody else would be late just like I was so that I could have their seat. I walked up to the desk to double check that I was on the standby list and was told very rudely to wait. So I did. I watched everyone board. I watched the standby list for my name. When everyone had left the waiting area, I walked up to the desk.

“Hi, umm…I’ve been on standby, and I just wondered if there were any seats left.”

The lady shook her hand impatiently, waving me off. “No, this flight is full. You’ll have to take another one.” She printed off my third ticket of the day and told me my gate was on the opposite side of the airport. *facepalm*

After my leisurely stroll through DFW, I walked up to my third counter and explained my situation. I had a guy this time, and he was the nicest person I talked to all morning. He tapped on his computer for a little while.

Looking at me, he said the seven most beautiful words I have ever heard:

“Here you go – you have a seat!”

I wanted to fall on the ground with relief. “OH MY GOSH I LOVE YOU.”

The people in in line behind me tittered. I took my ticket and walked to a bench, content to wait the next hour and a half knowing that I would, in fact, make it to Chicago and not be stuck in DFW for the rest of my weekend.

Just before I boarded, I noticed I had a window seat. I half-smiled, thinking, “Thanks, God! You know I love window seats.”

Then I got on the plane.

IMG_4085[1]

I had a window seat, all right! I laughed out loud. I didn’t even care though – I was so glad to finally be on a plane, ANY plane.

That’s one of my better travel stories to date! I had never missed a flight before this trip, and it was not an experience I hope to repeat! I think it’s safe to say I’ll be at the airport three hours early from now on.

Keep an eye out – I’ll be posting more pictures from the trip soon!
